When to Visit
"When's the cheapest time to visit Cancún?" has a real answer — but the honest version comes with a trade-off, and one case where the whole question changes.
If you're chasing the lowest rates, September and October are usually the cheapest months to visit Cancún. Resort rates can often be around 40–60% lower than peak-season pricing at some properties, although savings vary widely by resort, travel dates, and booking window.
The catch, told straight: this is also the peak of hurricane season.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the highest activity typically occurring from August through October. That sounds alarming, but it's worth keeping in perspective. Direct hurricane impacts on Cancún and the Riviera Maya are relatively uncommon, and many low-season trips experience periods of heavier rain or passing tropical weather rather than a major storm. October is one of the wettest months of the year. It's a genuine trade-off, not necessarily a reason to avoid traveling—but it's one of the reasons prices are often lower during this period.
December through April is peak season — the driest, sunniest weather, and the highest prices, with spikes around the winter holidays and spring break. You're paying for near-guaranteed sun.
If you want the best balance, aim for May or November. You get shoulder-season pricing with much lower storm risk than September–October, and generally excellent weather. Late April, the first half of June, late November (before US Thanksgiving), and early December (before the holidays) are also strong value windows.
Here's the case the guides never mention: the whole "cheapest month" calculation assumes the price moves with the calendar. If it doesn't — if your rate is locked the same all year — then the question flips. You stop optimizing for the cheapest month and start choosing on what you actually care about: weather, crowds, clear water.
